GS1 US Identifiers

GTINs are essential for marketplace listings and generating UPC barcodes for product labeling. If you need a GTIN—specifically UPC barcodes—you have two options: purchase a single GTIN for a small-scale start or obtain a GS1 Company Prefix to manage multiple products.

Single GTIN

Available for a one-time fee of $30, a GS1 US GTIN uniquely identifies a product in the supply chain and establishes your company as its sole brand owner.

GS1 Company Prefix

The prefix supports growth, enabling multiple barcodes, coupons, and higher-level packaging like cases or pallets. It links your company to products, with membership and annual renewal fees based on barcode needs.

FAQs About GTIN, UPC and GS1 US

Understanding GTINs and GS1 barcodes can be confusing, so we've compiled the following FAQs. Please contact us if you have additional questions.

What is the difference between SKUs, GTINs, and UPCs?

SKU (Stock Keeping Unit)

An SKU is an internal product code created by a company for easy inventory management. Each business generates unique SKUs, even for identical products sold by others.

GTIN (Global Trade Item Number)

A GTIN is a globally recognized product identifier used in the supply chain.

  • Required for product variations (e.g., size, color)
  • Encoded within UPC barcodes
  • Issued by GS1, ensuring global uniqueness
UPC (Universal Product Code)

A UPC is the physical barcode that encodes the GTIN. It is machine-readable and used for inventory and sales tracking.

Should I choose a single GS1 US GTIN or a GSI company prefix?

It depends on your business needs.

Single GS1 US GTIN

A single GTIN is ideal for small businesses with few products. It costs $30 with no renewal fees and includes a GS1 US certificate to verify ownership, making it perfect for startups.

GS1 Company Prefix

A GS1 Company Prefix is better for businesses planning to expand. It allows you to manage multiple GTINs, streamline inventory, and meet retailer requirements like Serialized Shipping Container Codes (SSCCs) and Global Location Numbers (GLNs). You can license a prefix for 10 to 100,000 GTINs, scaling as needed.

Is there a global database with GTIN and UPC information?

Yes! The GS1 US Data Hub is a free online tool provided only to companies who obtain their GTINs from the GS1 US. The GS1 US Data Hub enables users to; create, manage, and share GTINs, store product details, and download UPC barcodes.

For businesses with a GS1 Company Prefix, the GS1 US Data Hub generates GTINs based on GS1 Standards, ensuring accuracy and easy sharing with retailers. The GS1 US Data Hub eliminates the need for spreadsheets and reduces errors in product data.

The GS1 US Data Hub also supports creating other barcodes, like GS1-128 and ITF-14, for shipping needs.

Additionally, GS1 certificates are available from the same tool if requested by retailers or marketplaces.

Can GS1 GTINs and UPCs be used with QR and 2D barcodes?

Yes! The Sunrise 2027 Date for GS1 Digital Link enables companies with GTINs and UPCs from the GS1 US to transition to 2D Barcodes
